![]() ![]() Off the Grid and Fire and Vengeance, my second and third Hawaiian mystery novels, explored different aspects of the Big Island’s geography and history while enriching the character of my protagonist, Hilo Chief Detective Koa Kāne. My legal background and affection for Hawaii led me to write Death of a Messenger, a murder mystery in which the Big Island is, in many ways, the central character. ![]() I lived there part-time for twenty years. ![]() Afterward, I visited the Big Island of Hawaii and fell in love with its geography, history, people, culture, and language. Some years ago, I attended a legal conference in Honolulu. I practiced law in Washington, DC, and New York City, and represented clients in high-profile civil and criminal cases. I studied mathematics at Georgetown University, served a stint as an artillery officer in the US Army, and received my law degree from the University of Virginia. I grew up in a military family traveling the world, attending twelve different schools before graduating from high school.
